Artist Carves Intricate Kinetic Castles into Burled wood

Artist Uli Kirchler see’s an opportunity to create art in burl, a tree growth in which the grain has grown in a deformed manner. An unusual place for art.

He carves intricate castles with window openings that pop out of the wooden pieces when given a slight jag and goes back in with a push a kinetic model or art piece.

The Portland, Oregon-based artist works with these unique pieces of wood with textural surfaces and variegated coloration’s.

The stacked, castle-like towers rise from natural rough and jaggerd terain that seems to mimic rough mountaneous landscape.

He showcases his work frequently on Instagram and the Portland Saturday Market
